Jean M. Auel's The Shelters of Stone, the fifth novel in her beloved Earth's Children series, finally brings Ayla and Jondalar to their long-sought destination: Jondalar's homeland and the people of the Zelandonii. After their arduous journey across ancient Europe, they are greeted by the Ninth Cave of the Zelandonii, a sophisticated and complex society living in massive cliff dwellings. Ayla is fascinated by their culture, their intricate customs, and their advanced tools and spiritual practices, providing a wealth of the meticulously researched detail for which Auel is renowned.
However, Ayla's integration into this new community is far from seamless. Her unusual background – having been raised by the Clan (Neanderthals), her unique relationship with her animal companions (Wolf, Whinney the horse, and Racer the mammoth), and her extraordinary skills like fire-making and healing – makes her both a source of wonder and suspicion among the Zelandonii. While many are welcoming, particularly the revered spiritual leader Zelandoni, others fear her unfamiliar ways and harbor prejudice against the "flatheads" she calls her family. Ayla must navigate these social complexities while also preparing for her formal mating with Jondalar and the impending birth of their child.
As Ayla strives to find her place and gain acceptance, she also discovers that her knowledge and instincts are highly valued, particularly her healing abilities. She finds a kindred spirit in Zelandoni, with whom she can share her understanding of ancient medicine and the spiritual world. The Shelters of Stone is a sweeping tale of love, danger, and the challenges of cultural assimilation, as Ayla must call upon all her intelligence and resilience to decide her future and the significant role she is destined to play in the destiny of the Zelandonii people.
