Stephen King's The Tommyknockers transports readers to the quaint, seemingly ordinary town of Haven, Maine, a setting familiar to King's Constant Readers. The story begins when Roberta "Bobbi" Anderson, a writer living in the woods, stumbles upon a mysterious metal object protruding from the earth on her property. What she initially dismisses as junk soon proves to be something far more ancient and alien: a massive, long-buried spacecraft that begins to exert an insidious influence over her and, subsequently, the entire town.

As Bobbi becomes obsessed with excavating the object, the alien presence starts to "mutate" the residents of Haven. An invisible gas emanating from the ship slowly transforms their physical appearance and mental capabilities, granting them startling new powers of invention and telepathy, but at a horrifying cost: their humanity. The townspeople become increasingly brilliant at creating bizarre, technologically advanced devices, yet simultaneously lose their empathy, common sense, and connection to the outside world, becoming aggressive and homicidal towards anyone not under the ship's thrall.

Amidst this terrifying transformation, James Eric Gardener, Bobbi's estranged poet friend, arrives in Haven. Due to a steel plate in his head from an old injury, Gard finds himself partially immune to the ship's effects. He watches in horror as his friend and the entire town descend into madness, their newfound intelligence twisted into a malevolent collective consciousness. The Tommyknockers is a sprawling, often unsettling tale that blends science fiction with King's signature horror, exploring themes of obsession, collective delusion, and the destructive power of unchecked desires, culminating in a chilling struggle for survival against an otherworldly threat.
