Rick Riordan's The Son of Neptune, the second thrilling installment in the Heroes of Olympus series, picks up with Percy Jackson, the beloved demigod son of Poseidon, in an utterly disorienting predicament. He awakens with no memory of his past, save for one name: Annabeth. Pursued by gorgons, he eventually stumbles upon Camp Jupiter, a Roman demigod training ground in California, a place entirely foreign to him. Here, he discovers he is recognized as a "son of Neptune" – the Roman aspect of his divine father – and is quickly thrust into a new world of Roman military discipline, different from the Greek Camp Half-Blood he can't quite remember.
At Camp Jupiter, Percy quickly forms an unlikely bond with two new demigods: Hazel Levesque and Frank Zhang. Hazel, a daughter of Pluto, harbors a dark secret from her past, having died and been brought back to life, and her "gift" of summoning precious metals comes with a dangerous curse. Frank, a son of Mars (the Roman equivalent of Ares), is a clumsy but kind-hearted demigod with a powerful, yet terrifying, family secret that grants him unique abilities. This trio of outcasts, each with their own burdens and mysteries, soon finds themselves chosen for a perilous quest.
Their mission is to venture north, to the "land beyond the gods," to free Thanatos, the god of death, who has been chained by the giant Alcyoneus. If they fail, monsters will continue to rise from the dead, making the upcoming war against the primordial goddess Gaea unwinnable. As Percy slowly regains fragments of his memory and the new friends navigate treacherous lands filled with ancient Roman monsters and prophecies, they must confront their personal demons and work together to prevent a catastrophe that threatens both the Roman and Greek demigod worlds.
