Marissa Meyer's Renegades throws readers into a world where superheroes, known as Prodigies, have risen from the ashes of a crumbled society to establish peace and order. The Renegades, a syndicate of these super-powered individuals, are seen as champions of justice and symbols of hope, upholding the law and protecting the innocent. However, not everyone views them as heroes. For those they overthrew, including a group known as the Anarchists, the Renegades are merely a new form of oppressive rule, and their "justice" comes at a steep price.
The story centers on Nova Artino, also known as Nightmare, an Anarchist with a deep-seated vendetta against the Renegades. She believes they failed her and her family during a tragic incident years ago, and she is determined to seek vengeance. Her mission leads her to infiltrate the Renegades' ranks, posing as a new Prodigy. There, she encounters Adrian Everhart, also known as Sketch, a principled Renegade who believes fiercely in justice and whose adoptive parents are among the Renegades' most powerful leaders. Unbeknownst to them both, Nova and Adrian are on opposing sides of a hidden war, their allegiances pulling them in conflicting directions.
Renegades is a thrilling exploration of the blurred lines between good and evil, heroism and villainy. As Nova navigates her double life, she begins to question her long-held beliefs about the Renegades, while Adrian starts to see the imperfections within the system he's always defended. Meyer masterfully crafts a fast-paced narrative filled with secret identities, extraordinary powers, and complex moral dilemmas, keeping readers on the edge of their seats as Nova and Adrian's paths intertwine in a dangerous dance of deception and growing, forbidden attraction.
