"Nemesis" by Isaac Asimov is a standalone science fiction novel set in the 23rd century, where humanity has expanded into self-sustaining orbital colonies. One such colony, Rotor, under the leadership of the enigmatic Janus Pitt, breaks away from the Solar System using a newly developed near-light-speed "hyper-assistance" drive. Their destination is a mysterious red dwarf star, two light-years away, which they name Nemesis. Orbiting Nemesis is Erythro, a moon with a marginally habitable environment.

The narrative follows two primary perspectives across different timeframes. On Rotor, fifteen-year-old Marlene Fisher, the daughter of the astronomer who discovered Nemesis, possesses a unique ability to read people's body language with uncanny accuracy. She begins to uncover strange secrets about Erythro and its unusual bacterial life, which forms a collective consciousness. Simultaneously, back on Earth, Marlene's father, Crile Fisher, who was left behind when Rotor departed, becomes involved in the race to develop true faster-than-light travel to reconnect with the lost colony.

As the story unfolds, a terrifying discovery is made: Nemesis is not stationary but is on a collision course with the Solar System, posing an existential threat to Earth. Marlene, on Rotor, learns of this impending disaster but faces obstacles in communicating this crucial information. The novel explores themes of societal independence, the nature of consciousness, the challenges of interstellar travel, and the potential dangers lurking in the vastness of space, all while weaving together the personal drama of a separated family striving to reunite against a backdrop of cosmic peril.
